Oral hygiene month is the practice of keeping your teeth free from decay and your other mouth structures free from infection. This includes regular brushing and flossing. It is also recommended that you get a dental exam and cleaning at least two times a year.
The primary goal of good oral hygiene is to prevent plaque buildup that may cause tooth decay or gum infection.
Your mouth serves as the door to the internal parts of your body. The mouth also can show signs of other systemic diseases. Diseases such as Diabetes can sometimes be detected by the presence of mouth lesions or gum infections. Diseases such as periodontal disease can increase the risk of heart disease. Chronic inflammation in the mouth may affect many parts of the body including artery inflammation.
Other health complications caused by poor oral hygiene can include:
Keeping your teeth and mouth clean can help prevent the risks of some health complications. The best way to do this is to brush twice a day, floss and schedule regular dental checkups every six months.
Regular cleanings and dental examinations can help detect early signs of oral conditions or health complications caused by oral disease.
Tooth loss is the most common problem for children and adults. One of the most common reasons for tooth loss is poor dental hygiene. Regular and proper brushing can help prevent tooth loss but it is not enough to ensure that your oral health and hygiene are in top shape, it is best to schedule a professional dental cleaning two times a year.

“Friendly staff, very nice building, excellent work. I just had a crown done – all in one visit! Fit perfectly on the very first try. Didn’t even require any adjustments. The staff took extra care to make sure I was comfortable during the entire process. The business office was able to resolve an issue with my insurance. Feels like they were really advocating for me to help me pay as little as possible. One of the best dental visits I’ve ever experienced.” – SJ
